Abstract
Therapeutic apheresis is the technique for selective removal of an abnormal
constituent of the blood, with the return of normal blood elements to the patient.
Since the first therapeutic thrombocytapheresis in a patient with bleeding
thrombocythemia in 1966 by Colman, it has been used as acute therapy to effect a rapid
reduction of platelets.
To achieve a lasting effect, more definite cytotoxic therapy, which may not take effect
for days or weeks, should be started at the same time as hemapheresis.
Here, the authors described a clinical trial of therapeutic thrombocytapheresis in a
patient with essential thrombocythemia, resulting in rapid reduction of platelets
accompanied by clinical relief of symptom. Even though the definite evidence of
therapeutic role of repeated thrombocytapheresis is not apparant, the patient was
successfully treated with the continued trials of apheresis and chemotherapy.
